Exploring the Historic Joliet Prison: A Tour Through Time

Joliet Correctional Center, often referred to as the Old Joliet Prison, is one of Illinois' most infamous and historically significant landmarks. From its opening in 1858 to its closure in 2002, the prison has housed criminals, prisoners of war, and even some of pop culture’s most recognizable characters. Originally known as the Illinois State Penitentiary, Joliet Prison was constructed using limestone quarried on-site by the very prisoners it would soon hold. The first inmates arrived in 1858, and by 1872, the prison population had already surpassed 1,200. Over the years, it housed a wide range of prisoners, including Civil War detainees. The prison also had a separate facility for female inmates until 1933, when all women were transferred to the Oakdale Women’s Reformatory (later known as Dwight Correctional Center).

Joliet Prison gained notoriety not just for its historical significance but also for its pop culture appearances. The facility was famously featured in The Blues Brothers as the site from which Jake Blues is released, giving him the nickname “Joliet Jake.” The prison has also been seen in White Heat, Prison Break, and Let’s Go to Prison, solidifying its place in entertainment history.

A Family Legacy

An important part of the prison's history includes my great-grandfather,  Clayton King, who served as both Assistant Warden and later as Head Warden of Joliet Prison. His dedication to the facility and its operations was highly influenced by his superior Joe Ragen, making this historical site even more significant for those connected to its past.
